Bingo Night

Eyes Down for another Fun Filled Night of Bingo !!! Cash and Prize Bingo, and lot's of hilarity guaranteed. All profits to the MAG Fighting Fund. This will be our 8th Bingo Night, and if the previous three are anything to go by, a cracking night is in store. The excitement starts at 20:00 at the Grey Horse, Kirkgate, Wakefield, on Wednesday 27th June.

Hope to see you there.

4) Evening Rideout to Sheffield Speedway - Thursday 21st June

Our evening Rideout for June is on Thursday 21st June, to the Speedway Racing at Owlerton Stadium in Sheffield, home of the Sheffield Tigers Speedway Team, where they are facing the Glasgow Tigers.

Speedway Racing

We enjoyed it so much last year (and the year before), we are going again !!! Read all about our previous visits here:

It has to be said, Speedway Racing is pretty exciting stuff - Each race of 4 laps of the track lasts just over 60 seconds ... YES that's 15 seconds a lap!!! All this on fixed gear, 500cc single cylinder bikes which run on methanol and can accelerate from 0-60mph in under 2 seconds (faster than an F1 car) .... oh yes I nearly forgot .... they don't have ANY BRAKES!!!!! Four riders participate in each race (two from each team) with the winner taking 3 points, 2 for second, 1 for third and 0 for last, this is a team sport with the team accumulating most points over 15 races being declared the overall winners.

Entrance costs £16 (Concessions (over 65s): £13.00) and we will be leaving at 18:15 prompt from Redbeck Cafe, 339 Doncaster Road, Crofton, Wakefield, WF4 1RT. The racing starts at 19:30, and will finish at 21:30. As it's the destination we are most interested in on this occassion, rather than the journey, feel free to come in the car if the weather is less than favourable ;-) Also, if you can't quite make Redbeck for 18:15, meet us directly at Owlerton Stadium instead.

Hope to see you there. Check the Sheffield Speedway website for further details: www.sheffieldspeedway.co

5) Win a Daft Way Up Bike

The Daft Way Up was an epic adventure involving 17 riders (5 from Wakefield MAG), 2 support drivers, a cameraman and a fixer, and involved riding from Lands End to John O Groats in a week, on totally unsuitable machinery. Read all about it in the Event Report: Daft Way Up MAG and Macmillan fundraiser.

And now you can win Manny's legendary 2002 Honda C90 that carried him on the epic adventure from Lands End to John O Groats in April 2018.

Manny on his Honda C90

The C90 is a two owner bike (one 80 year old gentleman plus Manny) and has 12,000 miles on the clock. It will come with a full MOT. The proceeds of this raffle after costs will be divided equally between Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) and Macmillan Cancer Support (same sponsorship recipients as the Daft Way Up). The cost of each ticket entry into the raffle is £10 and you can purchase as many as you like although only 500 tickets will be sold (meaning you have a good chance of winning it).

You can get your tickets from:

The winning ticket will be drawn on Saturday 4th August after the Comedy Show at the Yorkshire Pudding rally by NABD Chairman Rick Hulse.

Full T's and C's for the raffle at: leeds.mag-uk.org/product/daft-way-up-raffle-tickets

Good Luck !!!!

6) Camping Barn Weekend

We have another Camping Barn weekend coming up, on Friday 21st - Sunday 23rd September, at the Dinah Hoggus Camping Barn, on the outskirts of the village of Rosthwaite in the Borrowdale valley (5 miles from Keswick in the magnificant Lake District). This will be our 4th visit and if the previous three visits are anything to go by, we have a fantastic weekend in store. The camping barn sleeps 12, but there is almost unlimited camping (you just have to share the field with the local Hardwick Sheep). Web Site: www.lakelandcampingbarns.co.uk/barns/dinah-hoggus-camping-barn

We have already booked the barn for our exclusive use all weekend, and the cost is only £27pp. Absolute Bargain !!! If you want to go, see Pete at any of our Wednesday meetings (or drop us an e-mail, phone (0772 078 4734) or contact us on the Wakefield MAG FaceBook Group) and £27 secures your place. First come first served for the 12 beds in the barn, but as mentioned, there are virtually no restrictions on the number of campers.

Check out the past event reports to whet your appetite for another cracking weekend with the Wakefield MAG Family:

7) An Evening of Culture

Wakefield MAG are having an evening of culture and taking in a Shakespeare play .....

..... with a motorcycle related theme .... obviously !!!

We are attending a mods and rockers themed Romeo & Juliet outdoor play on Sunday 22nd July (starting at 5pm) in Doncaster.

mods and rockers

Our seaside loving Capulets and Montagues have violent confrontation on their minds, even Down in the Tube Station at Midnight. Meanwhile, romantic Romeo is moping to the Rhythm of the Rain for his latest unrequited love! He's in for a surprise at the Capulet Party where Juliet likes his Black Betty and Juliet's Nurse thinks her Sweet Child of Mine is falling in love. Romeo's mates gatecrash the party and bang, Be Bop a Lula He's My Baby. Maybe, just maybe, The Power of Love will end the families' violent feud.

Tybalt has other ideas, and because he's Born To Be Wild, he gets into a fatal fight that sees two dead and Romeo banished. Juliet is left Chasing Cars and Every Breath is watched by her father. He will cheer her up by marrying her to the County Paris. Juliet, desperate to avoid this unwanted wedding, takes the Friar's sleeping potion and is buried in the family tomb. Romeo, hearing of his lover's 'death' speeds to her and in a final climax of coincidence and confusion our star-crossed lovers bring the story to a tragic end.

This is a Doncaster Culture Week event ...... Culture in Doncaster .... I know .... whatever next eh ;-)

Come dressed as a Mod or a Rocker ... you can take your pick. This is an outdoor event so you'll need to bring something to sit on.

The play is being held in Sir Nigel Gresley Square, Waterdale, Doncaster, Yorkshire, DN1 3BU. Parking (at the Cultural Quarter Car Park) is just two minutes walk away.

The cost is £14.50 (£10 under 26). Book your tickets at this link: www.castindoncaster.com/Event/romeo-and-juliet

9) Criminals are Criminals: Not Bikers

The Motorcycle Action Group is launching a campaign to persuade the media to stop referring to those committing crime on motorcycles or scooters as 'bikers'. How often do we see news reports describing dangerous 'biker' gangs doing wheelies down residential roads, terrorising local residents, snatching mobile phones or robbing jewellery stores? The reports come out daily. The reality, as any biker knows, is that the individuals carrying out these acts are normally on stolen machines and often have no licence, no insurance, and no understanding of what a biker really is.

Lazy media coverage and poor editorial rigour is reinforcing all the negative stereotypes with which motorcyclists have always been branded to a point where it seems that the mainstream press see the terms 'biker' and 'criminal' as interchangeable.

"Legitimate law-abiding bikers are fed up with being associated with criminal behaviour" says Colin Brown, MAG's Director of Campaigns & Political Engagement. "We have to work extremely hard to improve the public and political perception of bikers; the last thing we need is to be branded as, or associated with, the criminal elements of society. Lazy use of language has an enormous and subconscious detrimental impact on public perception. We are often viewed as intimidating faceless people because we have to wear helmets and safety gear, but the vast majority of us are friendly, warm, caring members of society."

MAG has begun its campaign to educate and edify news editors and reporters by writing a formal letter to the Director General of the BBC, Tony Hall. In the letter signed by National Chairman, Selina Lavender, it was explained that not all bikers are criminals, and therefore the term should not be used to describe criminals. In his response, the DG said: "You make some important points - I will let our News and programme teams know of the work that you and the Motorcycle Action Group are doing".

MAG will be formally writing to the editors of any news media, be they local or national, online, newspapers, radio or television stations, pointing out examples of poor use of terminology and requesting that they refrain from referring to these "crims" as bikers. Any publication responding and cleaning up their act will then be recognised, celebrated and may be nominated for MAG's Media Award.
