3) Wakefield MAG Clothes Bank Donation Fundraiser

We had 5 bags worth of un-wanted clothing donated at our Clothes Bank Donation Fundraising evening at our meeting on Wednesday 1st October. These will be taken to a local clothes bank, where we will be paid for the donations by weight. We'll let you know what we raised in the next newsletter, but it should be in the region of 20-25 quid, which will be donated to the MAG Fighting Fund. A simple way to raise funds for MAG, and a great way to get rid of your old rally T Shirts !!!!

Quiz Nite Poster

Now we are in Autumn, it's not actually that long to the most competitive event of the Yorkshire MAG year ... the hugely popular Wakefield MAG Bikers Quiz Nite !!!

The quiz will be held at 8:00pm on Wednesday 19th November 2014 at the Grey Horse, Kirkgate, Wakefield, WF1 4EJ.

We wont mess with a winning formula so it's the same tried and tested 60 questions, 30 of which will be motorcycle related and 30 will be general knowledge (but there will be a bike related link / theme somewhere, however tenuous). The quiz is hotly contested throughout Yorkshire and the prestigious roll of honour is:

Who will win in 2014 ? .... Leeds Again Probably !

Open to All. £1 entry fee p.p. Team (Max. 5) or individual entry. Great prizes for the winners (1st, 2nd & 3rd), plus booby prize for the least number of correct answers.

And just for a change ....... All proceeds to the MAG Fighting Fund ;-)

6) Classic Vehicles: Exemptions from Periodic MoT Testing

The Department for Transport (DfT) has set up a website for people to discuss and make suggestions about changes to road worthiness testing for classic vehicles. The current rules in Great Britain will have to change in 2018 and they are seeking views and evidence on the best way to make those changes.

Adapted from the DfT Website:

Motorbikes - Under current GB law motorbikes that were manufactured before 1960 can be exempt from MOT testing. A new EU directive allows the UK to continue to allow exemptions from MOT testing, but now for vehicles over 30 years old providing they have not substantially changed. The UK has to amend GB law to reflect the EU requirements if we wish to continue to exempt classic vehicles, but there is a lot of flexibility about how this can be done.

Background To Changes - Directive 2014/45/EU sets out minimum requirements for periodic road worthiness testing of vehicles used on public roads. Vehicles are categorised by type and the rules differ for each category. Motorbikes must be tested on a regular basis, unless exempt, but it's up to the member state to decide the frequency of the testing. The UK can decide if we want to exempt motorbikes of historic interest, if they have not been subject to substantial change, or we could choose to introduce regular testing for such vehicles. If we do decide to exempt motorbikes, we can decide how old they should be before they're exempted and how to define 'substantial change'.

Your views - On the DfT web page they have asked for views, which they say will help them to find the best way to treat motorbikes. In addition to comments which you can leave on the web page there is a short survey which you can complete to tell them:

The DfT have also asked some specific questions:

DfT update - 15th September: A total of 1612 people have completed the survey so far and the vast majority of people have answered in relation to cars and vans. There is support across all vehicle groups for each of the options however, the most popular is that classic vehicles should be exempt from period testing and that exemptions should be set according to the age of the vehicle. Support for periodic testing exemptions for classic vehicles is particularly strong amongst those answering in relation to motorbikes - 80% of motorbike respondents support exemptions.

NOTE: The website will be open to the end of October 2014.

This is a great opportunity to help formulate the legislation that we want. If large numbers of bikers don't respond and express their views, we can hardly complain after the fact that we don't like what was implemented !!!

It might seem like a long time away at the moment, but our Christmas Do is in a mere 2 months time !!! Following the lunchtime buffet, we will head into town to sample many of the Merrie Cities fine hostelries and quaff goblets of foaming ale !!. You can come for the meal, or meet us at one of the many pubs in town, or do both ... the choice is yours.

The date is set for Saturday 6th December and we are taking £5 deposits now to secure your place (we will be making the booking in early October). Let me know if you want to come. If last years Christmas do is any indication, we are in for a jolly good time. Hope to see you there.
