Fergus O'Connell R.I.P

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Fergus O'Connell, 50, who passed away on 7th November 2012 at his home. For those that hadn't had the pleasure of Fergus's company, I assure you that you missed out. A lot of people knew him through his regular page 'Ferg's World' in MAG's member magazine, The Road, but he was much more than that. He was a father and husband and fought for rider rights for decades.

Ferg

A Grimsby man all his life and a very familiar face in Yorkshire MAG for decades (NE Lincolnshire was part of Yorkshire MAG until relatively recently). He held many local and national positions in MAG over the years, and will be perhaps best remembered as MAG's National Clubs Officer, a role he excelled at, and without doubt, the most successful Clubs Officer in the history of MAG.

For those who heard his speeches and presentations, they were both informative and hilarious and he had some amazing stories to tell.

He will be sadly missed by all who had come to expect him at rallies, parties, and MAG meetings.

Ferg's funeral was held on 29th November and started with a procession from his home on Hainton Avenue, Grimsby to the church (The Minster and Parish Church of St. James, Grimsby), where the first service, 'a celebration of Ferg's life', was held.

After the church service, the procession headed to Grimsby Crematorium for final committal. Following that, the rest of the day and into the night, the wake was held at The Casablanca, Oxford Street, Grimsby.

Ferg always wanted a big send off, and he certainly got that. Estimates vary, but up to 700+ motorcycles joined the procession, with the police giving permission to ride helmetless as the roads were closed for the occasion. Half a dozen Wakefield MAG members attended to pay their last respects and reported that it was an immense sight, great atmosphere and a very fitting tribute to a great man.
